This video will guide you through the basic reasons an automobile will not start. The most common cause is a dead battery. Made sure you rule that out properly before checking other things.
How to check for spark:
How to check for fuel:
How to check timing marks:
Compression test:
Well, something in the system is failing. Do you have a CEL? If so, what
are the codes?
Yeah I did. The one code was a transmission sensors. there was a code for
the sensor it required and update from Volvo that no else can preform. Im
not sure if there are any others.
What year car do you have?
Are you saying your scanner needs to be updated by Volvo? Im not
understanding.
I’m saying that you can not get codes from a car that has had the battery
removed. Have you checked and verified the other items in the video? What
is missing? Fuel pressure? Spark? Compression? Timing?
Did you mean a Cen-Tech Can OBDII coder reader and if so do you have an
opinion about that reader.
Was this the correct response to this comment? I asked about codes on
another video (I think) Anyway I Have: Spark Fuel Timing Compression and
all of a sudden the car started after a long ignition crank
Good to read. You’re good to go, correct?
on the surface I guess but .. don’t really know why
These Volvo I5’s have a rare hiccup that happens from time to time. It’s
called the Lawnmower syndrome. If someone starts the car and doesn’t let
the motor run long, and shuts it off (like moving the car to move it far
enough to get the lawnmower out of the garage), it can cause the fuel in
the piston area to wash the oil off the piston walls. At that point you
will have NO COMPRESSION which will cause the car not to start. Two ways to
correct it: 1. Long crank. 2. Add oil to pistons & crank.
AWESOME!! that was it! I moved the car out of the garage (just in the drive
way) hours later moved back in..next day car didnt start!
Thanks Rob!
Have you done a compression test?
No. Its the only thing I have not done. I don’t have a gauge to do that
test.
You will likely have to purchase one from a store. Maybe $40.

point. Easy to understood theory & practical. Easy to follow up. Double
thumbs up to you for your very useful info.I really enjoy watching all your
videos. I liked your way of tutorial, slow & calm. Once again a big thank
you to you for gave me some very useful tips… You are one of Professor

i have a volvo 1998 s70 that seems to be having some fuel issues….like
the filter or relay is off I want to take it to a dealer but dont want to
get taken to the bank. HELP
Hi, I have a 96 850 turbo, it cranks, but no spark, I know that the spark
plugs are good, because the are recently new. There have been a few times
where, when in the higher range of RPM’s the car would stall out with an
engine light and a transmission light, but come back to life within 2 or so
seconds. On rare occasions, when it stalls at speed it wont come back on.
Then randomly, it will crank but not spark again. I am thinking it is
either the cam sensor or crank sensor. Both of the sensors registered the
proper amount of OHMS when I checked them though. Any help please?
Thanks again Robert ! This is really helpful and I’m gonna try every single
one and I’ll be in touch for whatever I got from the car and I really
appreciate your help …
Robert I enjoyed your video, one other thing that may prevent a car from
starting would be corrosion in the cables either at the battery or to the
starter and that can be checked by doing voltage drop tests on those
cables, there are you tube videos on this if you add this dimension to your
videos it would be that much better.Anyway, great video.
Well done
