I-5 North (CA), Orange County South & Central, Exit 72 – Exit 103B
This video follows I-5 North thru Southern and Central Orange County. Provides an overview of the construction and current state of the El Toro “Y”, which at a maximum of 26 lanes, is one of the widest stretches of freeway in the world.
ORANGE COUNTY, CA

what an awesome ride!! and you always choose the perfect song!!! where
exactly is the cam placed?
nice video!! 😉
@IsoscelesKramer: I may attempt to film this in the southbound direction.
Encountering those very same curves is a much bigger thrill, as you drive
them going downhill!
@HoltCalifornia: Depends on the hour. In the mornings going northbound, you
can probably save up to 30 minutes in time, by taking the 73. Going
southbound during the afternoon/evening commute, you might achieve even
more savings in time. This is because of the severe southbound bottlenecks
along I-405 thru Irvine (where 7 lanes merge down to 5 lanes at Culver),
and once you get onto I-5 south at the El Toro “Y” interchange. Expect more
stop-and-go down I-5, down to the 73 freeway.
@Gamerzde: I know there’s just a handful of autobahn’s in Germany that have
traffic counts, similar to what you’d find on L.A.’s freeway network, but
otherwise, the busiest ones usually carry somewhere in the 100,000 –
150,000 vehicle per day level. Definitely nothing like Greater Los Angeles,
where many freeways carry in excess of 300,000 vehicles per day, or more.
I’m also not aware of any autobahn’s that have 20+ lanes for that matter,
or are there?
@FreewayBrent Used to live in Socal. Living in HI now. Haven’t been back to
LA for awhile.
@FreewayBrent: There are a lot of autobahn´s in Germany but only a few of
them carry so much traffic. And not as much as arround Los Angeles =) I
will make a video of our autobahn A 29 from Oldenburg to BadZwischenahn and
upload it on youtube. Hope you´II like it =)
I remember when I-5 was only three lanes in each direction through Santa
Ana, Irvine and Anaheim..etc.. It was very bumpy too, with concrete cracks!
@96justinpark: lol, you asked and I delivered. Check out my I-105 West
video, which was released just a few days ago.
If you Google “Santa Ana Freeway Old” and scroll down to page 7, you’ll see
the picture. It shows a two lane freeway with puffy cumulus clouds in the
sky. The picture is just to the left of the I-5 blue sign and above the
state route 42 sign
@fku8447 HOV Lane: High Occupancy Vehicles Lane.
this is not a wide highway! here in europa we have 5 and 6 lines in one
directions some times. so that is 12 driving lines, and on both sides a
emmergencie line.(that is wide), this is just an orderner wide road
Great video as usual ! Great freeways too ! Thanks ! By the way ,Rubikfan
,i know Neatherlands : where the hell can we find your 5 or 6 lanes
highways ? In your dreams ? Or during 1 mile ,lol ?
so they spent alot of money in making alot of lanes, but still they can not
afford good tarmac?
Tow truck in HOV, VIOLATION? CHP followed him during 6 mins?
Haha!
Thanks for the update CJS. I’m still amazed by the expanse of the whole
system in metro LA. Appreciate your detailed info. Going N ON 5 into LA
County for DTLA, is it still three lanes from 605 to 710 as one goes
through Slauson, Florence, etc? From memory, I don’t think there’s room to
widen in Commerce, Bell Gardens due to all the trucking industry.
I will do so. I’m sure people still wish every freeway there had another
ten lanes each direction. Thanks!
Just FYI, I noticed that I-5 south of the el toro Y interchange now has
open access hov lanes… Not that it makes a big difference 🙂
Oh…just a nice little $500 fine, for those unfortunate souls who happen
to break the law. If you get get caught a 2nd time, the fine is
significantly higher. The 3rd time, you could be looking at easily over
$1,000.
Let´s Take a ride Trough OC California
I agree with you wholeheartedly on that. Philadelphia and it’s greater
suburbs really need to work on the roads. I had to go down to Wayne for a
bit for training a few months ago, and 476 people just don’t drive, and 30
(while not a freeway) doesn’t have any turning lanes.
cool video, never been to California before, i dont know about driving
there but taking the train there, i will do that and rent a car there.
I think its at the orange crush interchange
Orange County is so much cleaner than LA. More trees too. Which is ironic
considering how many green policies and tree huggers there are in LA vs
OC.
